Since many years I use CorelDraw to prepare my figures for publication. Although you will need some time to learn all necessary functions, later you'll be able to produce figures of any complexity faster than with any other software. It is really simpe to incorporate bitmaps, to import diagrams from Excel and to organise the textual information around your drawing. At the end you can export your ready figure in almost any format you can imagine. Till now I did not get any complain about the quality of figures produced in CorelDraw.
